A Night at the Park

Jenna, one of my favorite bloggers, host a series of challenges every month. I've completed a few of them, like going to the doctor and baking a chocolate cake (from scratch! be proud!). I've also signed up for a few and forgotten to take pictures or do them. But this month, I've managed to do April's lifestyle challenge AND take pictures. Shocking, right?

I'll be accepting my award later in this post.

April's lifestyle challenge is do some activity for free. For cero dollars. So on Good Friday, and after spending a night spending a lot of money seeing the Hannah Montana movie and going bowling, we (me, the roomie and her beau) dropped by the roomie's beau's home, whipped up some hot chocolate and took it to the park.

The roomie wore this hat. I'm not sure why.

There is only one swing for anyone above the age of three at the park. I took it.

That left the roomie with six baby swings to choose from. In this horrible grainy photography she is showing her awesome balance skills.

We sat on the swings for a while, talking about other random trips to the park and our Easter plans. By this time, after the movie and bowling and talking, it was quite late and come to find out the park closes at eleven--a good two hours after we had arrived. So we left after two police cars showed up and kindly informed us of the park's closing time :)
But all in all, despite freezing temperature and watching two cop cars drive up behind our car, it was quite fun...and free.

A Busy Saturday

This is the first Saturday I've had off in months (besides my NYC trip and holidays).

Too bad I have a million things to do.

My Comparative Religions class and I visited the Congregation B'Nai Emunah this morning in Tulsa. It was very interesting, and I would really enjoy going back. We also passed a morning market, which made me a bit more open to moving to Tulsa after getting married. I'm psyched that my new job is only during the week.

Sweet Saturday, we will meet again.

In about half an hour the Senior Ladies' Tea begins. Jenn and I weren't going to go, but we both were able to take it off.

I don't really like tea, but hopefully this won't be boring.

My future sister-in-law is throwing my a bridal shower this evening, so when it's all said and done, this Saturday is pretty much just like any Saturday at work--busy.

But I still like it better.

Apple introduced another new iPod--this time they have redesigned the shuffle:

The design's pretty snazzy--you control the songs and volume via ear buds. But it only comes in silver and black.

Jordan and I got engaged in December of 2007. Since I only had three semesters left of college, we decided to wait until I graduated to tie the knot. This gave me plenty of time to obsessively pour over The Knot and Weddingbee. I've been looking for invites since the beginning of our engagement, since I knew I wanted to DIY them (after designing two of my friend's invites, I fell in love with wedding stationary).

I looked at pocket folds, letterpress, buying a gocco, and not DIYing them because I was a little overwhelmed. But thanks to a post via Weddingbee I now have my invitations!

Behold:

I love them--simple, but different. Elegant, but cheap. And with a few minor color changes, they will fit in perfectly with my vintage-Victorian-black/pink/ivory wedding!

Granted, most of my knowledge of India comes from a few fiction books, a couple of Bollywood films and a little bit of studying on the country, but I would love to see it. So much history, beautiful architecture and so many interesting people...

We visited a Hindu temple today in Tulsa--one of most interesting trips I've made to a religious site. I really enjoyed looking at the temple and listening to the priest. Make me want to look about at the books I've read about India and re-examine them (I went through a phase Winter 2007 when I read about six or seven fiction books about India or Indians.)

I'm coming to the end of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, which makes me sad. Such a good book--it's broken into small chapters/stories so it is nice to have in my bag when I just have a few moments to read. Pick up a copy if you haven't read it yet. It's going straight to the top of my favorites list. Speaking of books, I won an ARC copy of Golden Girl by Micol Ostow this weekend at Lauren's Crammed Bookshelf. Be sure to check her website out! why i read {part one}

I read because I now know that upon arriving in Italy (which I will, one day) I must eat Neapolitan-style pizza at Pizzeria da Michele.

So Sofie and I have come to Pizzeria da Michele, and these pies we have ordered--one for each of us--are making us lose our minds. I love my pizza so much, in fact, that I have come to believe in my delirium that my pizza might actually love me, in return. I am having a relationship with my pizza, almost an affair. Meanwhile, Sofie is practically in tears over hers, she's having a metaphysical crisis about it, she's begging me, "Why do they even bother trying to make pizza in Stockholm? Why do we even bother eating food at all in Stockholm?

Not quite what I wanted, but at least now I won't have to re-size every single photo to fit the itty-bitty width of the last layout.

I'm currently working on a Shutterfly album for my Europe trip and I'm spending quite a bit of time, trying to figure out when we were where. I kept a journal all through London and most of Paris, but once I got two days behind it was impossible to catch up. However, only spending three days in both Poland and Switzerland makes it easier to find what I'm looking for. I've only written two pages, but I think this is going to be a great way to remember my trip and have a nice way to display it.

I miss London

For all Mac users (you know, the best kind), if you download the latest Shutterfly application for iPhoto, you will recieive a free 8x8 photo book. You still have to pay shipping and handling, though. I recently order a (free) calender through the website and pleased with the results.

Also, they sent me two when I order one.

My little town might be paranoid. It seems everytime some form of storm passes through, we begin to believe we are doomed.

Oh god, it's going to flood. Remember in 1986 when all of Bartlesville was underwater....

Windy?
Tornado. There is going to be a tornado. We better gather up the candles...

A bit of snow?
Cancel school! The buses can't make it out in these type of weather.

To be honest, Bartlesville has flooded several times, including just two years ago. And last winter a really bad ice storm hit, knocking out some people's power for a month. My own power was knocked out for three weeks. And we do get some massive snow storms occasionally.

And yes, we are smack dab in the middle of Tornado Alley.

So maybe we have a reason to freak out. Or maybe we just like to be prepared.

Just don't try and go find water at Wal-Mart today :)

as exicted as i am for jordan and mine's wedding, i'm also really exicted about having a home.

a home to live.

it's acutally quite sad, as looking at towels and wash clothes becomes fun

i was looking through a Knit Simple magazine and saw this:

I'm not crazy about the the throw, but the pillows are adorable. This is the only picture I could find of them, but there are wooden buttons on front. The best part is that they are made from the two most basic stiches ever. Once Jordan and I decided on a scheme of sorts for our living room I'm going to try a couple of these.

when i went over to Europe for three weeks, i brought a carry-on. just one. It had enough clothes for four days and my little bag of essentials and a small backpack to carry through out the day.

After hitting London, Windsor, Paris, Versailles, Krakow, Liechtenstein and most of Switzerland, my little bag was over-flowing. One of the ladies who was also traveling the entire trip was nice enough to let me send my backpack full of items with her.

This was August.

Yesterday, Jen and I traveled to a five hour drive to corral my backpack of European treasures.

I opened the bag to find 2 dirty shirts and a pair of jeans and the following items:

1. A Sorbonne University shirt from Paris bought from the small shops around Sacre Coeur.
2. A biography of Marie Antoinette with matching bookmark from Versailles.
3. A oatmeal cardigan bought at H&M in London.
4. A pink Swiss Army knife we bought in Switzerland.

While it may not be much, it's very nice to have it back.

Nie is back!

I started reading the Nie Nie dialogues when my google reader brought it up in their suggestion box. It was cute, endearing and I spent quite a bit of time going through her archives.

Days later, Nie and her husband where in a horrible plane crash.

The blogging world rallied around the family in a way I have never seen before.

But today NIE is back!

An 80s Movie

went to Wal-Mart to pick out a movie...

I've watched this before.
Once before I became a big sister in 1989.
And again on our Spring Break vacation to Florida.

So far my favorite part is the drunk skeleton yelling, "Unicorn. Uuuuuunnnnniiiicorn."

I was doing so well, posting five days in a row. And then last night, after watching Sydney White with the roomie, it was Zzzzzzzzz. I was so tired. This back-to-school thing is catching up with me.

It might have to do with the fact that I stayed up until 2 or 3 three in the morning and slept until I woke up over break.

Just sayin'.

Tonight is the roomie and mine's "date" night. Since it is our last semester we've decided to have one night a week where she and I just hang out.

No other friends. (but we still love you!)
No significant others.

Just me and her.

Tonight is our first "best friends" date night. We're going to see Bride Wars!

Next week we are off to the lake to hang out with my grandparents and just relax. But for future dates, I think we might go see some shows in Tulsa.

Travel to Kansas to walk the yellow brick road.

The roomie is from Kansas.

We are also planning on hitting up the Little House on the Prarie, complete with a picnic.

It's only about 30 minutes from our school.

We have some other fun things planned--none cost over 25 dollars and I can't wait to share the pictures from all of our fun "dates." Anyone have any inexpensive fun things to do?

Went to my racquetball activity class to find someone playing in one racquetball court the school has and our professor isn't quite sure if he is teaching our class or how to play racquetball.
On the upside, I was out of class by 8.15 am.

One of my favorite blogs to read is That Wife. Jenna is also Mrs. Avocado from Weddingbee and she also happened to marry a Pole whose family grew up close to Krakow---yay for Polish heritage and Europe! Her blog is awesome and frequently updated (unlike mine) and her newest feature is start some challenges for each month-a FOOD challenge, a PHOTOGRAPHY challenge, and a HEALTH challenge. I love this idea!

I've signed up for the health challenge. I need to make an eye appointment for my yearly check-up and then visit my doctor about a mole on my back and one on my arm. My mom had a spot of skin cancer show up on her chest last summer, and I really should went to the doctor then, but between my trip and school starting I just forgot about it. But by the end of January I will have them removed. And, bonus, the mole on my back was visible in my wedding dress and now it will be gone!

On a different note, school starts tomorrow. My last semester ever. I'm taking a World History class, a Comparative Religion course, Portfolio, Writing for Mass Media, Raquetball Activity, and a Psych/Lit course which I'm going to go crazy over. I'm now off to pay for school and buy my books.

tuesday jen and i drove up to Emporia State University to meet with the department heads of library science (me) and psychology (jenny).

it was awful.

jenny's person forgot about her. just forgot. and her second meeting took place fifteen minutes after it was schedule. she was fuming by the time we met back up.

after navigating the largest building on campus to an unmarked office area in the corner, i arrive to my appointment with the director.

she went over the program, assistantships, what i need to do to get in. And then spoke for about 45 minutes about how i should not apply for library school, that i should go and work at a library for a few years and then apply to library school.

awesome. just what i wanted to hear. ma'am could you please tell me when i could find a full-time library position without a library science degree? Sure, i mean, one has to exist somewhere. but not around here. and it also makes me think i'm not cut out for this.

however, at end of the day, jen and i both decided that at least we have one less place we have to apply to.

I have so much to get done today (you know, which is why I'm blogging). It's time to clean up the ol' dorm room and get the stack of homework I had all of fall break to work on done. So I've pulled on the sweater and sweatpants, pulled out my REALLY big laundry basket and took a trash bag from the bathroom and am now ready to get this cleaning party started.

yesterday i headed for the lake to chill out and show my grandma my Europe pictures...i ended up staying for several hours, and watching this show on hbo with my grandparents:

True Blood's basic plot? Girl meets Vampire, Girl Tries to Decide if Girl Like Vampire...and that's it at the moment because there has only been 5 episodes. I just spent the last half hour catching up on the first four, and my grandma will be recording it for me from now on. 2008 is definitely the year of the vampire.

I've been questioning this a lot today. Weddingbee, a web site I visit every day was recently sold to eHarmony. Having dated the same fella since my junior year of high school I've never been intrigued by dating websites. Today, however, I have learned a lot about one. And they aren't things that a company should be proud of.

Balancing my beliefs in my Creator and also my instilled belief in equality is something I have struggled with, even more recently as I have began to evaluate most of my beliefs which I see so preached but not practiced in the "Christian" community. I have family members in same-sex relationships that I love, and what to support, but find a small part of me holding back.

This is something I have thought about for a while, and an awful lot today, and it's something I will be thinking about for days to come.

writing about a Queen

we're writing historical one-act plays in my creative writing class. i wasn't really keen on taking this class (but of course it was required!). but when prof hughes brought the historical play i knew immediately that i wanted to write about my new favorite time period--France under the reign of Louis XVI. Why? Because I'm in love with this place:

while in France this summer we visited Versailles. Ah--I love it! It's so beautiful and peaceful. I find myself picking things up at the library about France's history and culture because of this place. And after finding Paris to be, well, less then I expected, Versailles quickly became my favorite stop in France.

My play is going to revolve around France's last queen: Marie Antoinette

I've read Fraser's biography on the queen, and I've picked up some more books on the palace of Versailles and the French Revolution. I own the movie about Marie Antoinette, just haven't had the time to watch it. Maybe tomorrow (my day off!)
